Is there a way to "comment out" lines while composing?

• Apr 30, 2024 - 05:12

I want to be able to make some notes not play while listening to my composition, but not delete them. Is there a way to keep them there but not make any noise without too much effort?

I'm not sure.

When I hear the phrase "comment out", I interpret that to mean that it gets skipped completely. A "comment" in a computer program is completely not processed; it's simply skipped, with no pause and no other effect. The equivalent in music would be to skip the measures completely, without the pause for the non-playing notes to "play" (silently).

There isn't a really equivalent notation in music, but you could imagine a D.S. going FORWARD to a Segno to jump past one or more measures with no gap ... which I assume (on no evidence) doesn't work.

After a moment to experiment: D.S. pointing forward does work! I'm astonished.

So, jacobpoulter, you could use that as well:

In the last measure before your "Commented Out Measures", place a D.S.. In the measure after your "Commented-Out Measures", place the Segno mark. This will skip those measures without the pause I described above.

Try them both to see which works best for your particular needs.

set the dynamics for the note to PPP. Even at full volume on the computer I can barely here a note set at PPP. I just noticed too there are settings as low as PPPPPP. Almost "dead silent"
