MuseScore 4.0.1 crashes on open every time

• Feb 25, 2023 - 07:40

I got Musescore 4.0.0 a couple months ago when it came out and it worked fine. However, today i tried to open it several times. It would show the startup thing and then crash in a few seconds, whether i started the program from the dock, launchpad, apps list in finder, opening a saved score, whatever. I assumed it was just a bug that had been fixed with version 4.0.1, so installed the new version but kept having the same problem. I'm on Mac OS 10.14.6 Mojave, so I don't have the newest operating system, but that wouldn't explain why it was working before today. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

- MuseHub requires: macOS 11.5 or higher

So you are probably facing an upgrade if you want to use MS 4.

I was using MuseScore 4.0.2 on a Win 10 desktop without any problems. Suddenly, it crashed. It started up again fine, using Hub. But after using it for an hour, it crashed again. After that, when I try to start it, I get the loading screen for a few seconds, and then it disappears.

I deleted Hub and MS 4, then installed a fresh version of MS 4 only. Restarted my computer. Same thing happens. I have a score I've spent a lot of time working on in MS 4 and I know I can't open it in 3. Help!

Thanks.
David

Sorry to hear you are having trouble! If you have precise steps to make MuseScore crash with a specific score, please attach the score here and give the steps. Then if we can confirm the problem, you can open an issue on GitHub to report the crash to the developers directly so it can be fixed. meanwhile we can help you find workarounds. But first step, we need the score and steps to reproduce the problem.

I have a similar issue with a crash on start up, OS is Windows 11. I have a few output devices. Built in Monitor speakers (never use), A Creative labs katana V2 soundbar (USB) to replace speakers and a separate USB DAC for headphone audio. When I'm using the Katana soundbar, Musescore 4 will not open (crash on start up). USB DAC is fine, no issues.

Of course I can just use the headphones but that is not a lot of use when I want to output to speakers. Changing audio I/O in app does not help. Selecting the USB soundbar crashes musescore. Note that Musescore 3 and all other applications are fine.

If any logs etc will help identify the issue please let me know what is needed and I'm happy to upload.

Same issue, win 11. It was working, now doesn't get past loading screen. Reinstalled both Musehub and Musescore 4, no effect. Tried using 3.6.2 to get by, and have now realized these files are not backwards compatible.

Assuming you are starting from the program icon and not by trying to open a specific score, this suggests you might have a VST instrument that is causing problems. Try renaming your VST folder to prevent MuseScore from finding it. orl if you are starting from s specific score, try not doing that.

My muze score 4 worked well until today, after the hub updated something this morning. It then continually crashed when opening, either using program icon or a score. I uninstalled it as far as I could. But I am afraid to try to download it again. Maybe I need to download an older option? But which one???

I have mac OS Monterey V 12.6.7
MacBook Pro

Do you have MuseScore set to automatically open a score on startup? If so, it could be that score. Try opening by double-clicking this score, which definitely shouldn't cause a crash. If you continue to have trouble, please describe more about your system, like if you are using any non-default audio devices or third party VST instruments.

i tried to delete the muse score entirely earlier today, so I could start over. As I assumed that the last update caused the problem. So I cannot really check anything. But I do not know if it all is gone or not. Hard to know with apple. I have described the problem a lot below but I really need to know Which version of Muse Score should I try to install to try to get started again? Your score of course now cannot be opened.

Here below I try to describe the problem in more detail and other things that might have been the problem. So it dosn't occur again.

I didn't program it to start up anything especially, as far as I can remember..I sometimes started with opening a score, but also used the icon. This afternoon the icon had vanished fro the bottom bar for easy startups. I tried to start it from the applications and also from a score. But neither worked. Double click on anything made the same thing happen. As the icon was going from the bottom I tried to open a score.
It was a score a friend sent me in fact. One I was going to work on for the first time to correct the mistakes.

the muse score icon had also disappeared from the app folder, so I tried to install it again. (well, the hub installed from that dmg. ) Nothing seemed to help so I uninstalled the hub and put the icon of muse score from the app folder in the rubbish bin.

I use only the internal audio of the computer (I guess that is default. I do not know what is VST instruments? I clicked on the strings and voice extra things on the hub at one point, which seemed like it might be nice to have those sounds. Is that VST? . Was that what the hub was trying to install? I have no idea, WHAT the things are that the hub or muze score says it wants to install something. I ALWAYS make sure nothing starts installing without my permission, even for any updates. so I wish it was more clear than that 'MUSE HUB WANTS TO INSTALL" message and I need to give my permission with the inlog from my macbook.

I do have Sibelius First installed on my computer.

I never had any problem with Muse score until today.

Not sure what else I can mention?

o and I found this message in something log I think: . I am on Amsterdam time so if this is local time mentioned it was early this morning,

please let met know if I can safely install Muze Score again? If so, which version can I sue safely? I couldn't follow your instructions as I uninstalled the Hub and put the program app in the trash bin.

I do not have third party VST instruments for Muze Score. I did install instruments that were on the hub, but that should be gone by deleting the program? I use the inbuilt audio device from my mac book.

Thanks,
Judith

It's never not been safe to install MuseScore. Just reinstall it normally. The current version is always the best - right now that's 4.1.1. Then if you encounter a problem after the reinstallation, please describe it in more detail.

Deleting MuseScore would not delete the Muse Sounds, but deleting Muse Hub might, depending on the specifics of the system. To be safe, just reinstall it normally. Don't try to change any default settings; that's likely to cause problems unless you understand exactly what you are doing.

ok, I downloaded the muse score hub and then klikked on muse score which downloaded. the muse score app is in the app list. But if I klik on it, I can see the words muse score briefly then there is a kind of flash and it disappears. So I just downloaded the dmg for muse score without the hub (leaving hte hub in place) and Ik an going to try to install ik with that.

In reply to by jlp56

I now have been able to install muse score again with no problem. I opened some files I was working on previously.

Now I am wondering if the file a friend sent me was causing the crash. She created it from a scan of a pdf. (She has an app which does this). What is a safe way to find out if that file had caused the crash? My friend evidently had no problem with the file: she was working on it to clean up the mistakes. Is that something you could test for me?

Yours,
Judith

Just for your understanding: a zip tool is a dedicated program that can pack and unpack files or directories to get a (much) smaller file size. In Windows there are several: WinZip, 7-zip, WinRar and certainly others. I'm sure there are some for the Mac as well, and I'm surprised you don't know about it.

Musescore uses that too, because the actual paritiur is normal text in a file with the extension mscx and that is accessible after unzipping the mscz file with a zip tool. However, it does not seem to be the case with your file, as others can open it.
Sometimes you cannot open a Musescore file because part of the content is corrupted. Then my suggestion may be the salvation.

Have you also tried the factory reset?

In reply to by jlp56

No issues with that. But, there is no reason you can't check that for yourself. Just open it normally. If it crashes, you know there is a problem with that file. That's exactly the same thing we are doing for you - we don't have special powers here :-). If the file crashes on open, then don't open it again, but no harm done, not to your computer or to ours. But then the next step would be to open an issue to report the problem.

ok, thank you everyone. It seems that this score did not cause the crash of muse score last week. It happened after some sort of update to Muse Score which I OK's. But that was about the same moment I tried to open that score. Since I have uninstalled hub and muse score and installed them separately, the crash is not happening and also I could use the score. So I am now suspicious if I get any suggestion from the muse Hub, I am not letting it do anything, the more since I have no idea what it is trying to update or help or what. I can continue to work on m score(s).

In reply to by jlp56

Muse Hub is what updates MuseScore and Muse Sounds, and it knows exactly when and how to do this. Unless you are an expert in system administration and know exactly how to manage all that on your own without it, please do not override any of its defaults. When it's time to update something, it knows, and you should let it complete the job correctly or you are more likely to cause than prevent problems. Whatever went wrong was probably as unrelated to Muse Hube as it is to this score - more likely just a bad second on your hard drive, a bad internet connection while downloading, or some other completely random occurence.

In reply to by shamelkaDevFer…

Indeed, nothing wrong with the score. So if you're experiencing a crash on open, it may be related to some bad settings within MuseScore, or perhaps something special about your system - a particular hardware device or VST plugin or other software running that is causing a conflict. Anything unusual about the audio setup on your computer? Also, try starting MuseScore from a command prompt window and giving it the "-F" command line option to revert to factory settings. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/revert-factory-settings, and substitute "4" anywhere you see "3".

I had a similar issue with a crash on start up, OS is Windows 11. I have a few output devices. Built in Monitor speakers (never use, sounds terrible), A Creative labs katana V2 soundbar (USB) to replace speakers and a separate USB DAC for headphone audio. When I'm using the Katana soundbar, With Musescore 4 will not open (crash on start up). USB DAC is fine, no issues.

Of course I can just use the headphones but that is not a lot of use when I want to output to speakers. Changing audio I/O in app does not help. Selecting the USB soundbar crashes musescore. Note that Musescore 3 and all other applications are fine.

Since 4.1.1 I can open scores with the "katana" but audio output is garbled.

This occurs regardless of the score I am playing.

If any logs etc will help identify the issue please let me know what is needed and I'm happy to upload.
