Hi Perholje,

The Norwegian language is for the moment only for the MuseScore software and is quite well up to date, but it can use a finishing touch. Read in the post how to help updating the Norwegian language.

Concerning the website, it would be nice indeed to translate it in Norwegian as well. Before I can enable it, I need to know which one you would select: Norwegian Bokmål or Norwegian Nynorsk?

In reply to by perholje

Hi Per,
I enabled Bokmål. To dive into it, the typical first job is to translate the MuseScore teaser page:

  1. Go to the teaser page
  2. Click on the translate tab
  3. Hit the link to add the Norwegian translation
  4. Replace all English text with Norwegian but leave all html markup intact
  5. Once finished, submit and go to http://musescore.org/nb to see your work

All other pages on musescore.org translate in the same way. It's advised to start with the menu pages (download, ...).

One more thing: there are a couple of strings which need manual translation. If you could add the translation in a comment, that would be kind:

  • Free music composition & notation software
  • Free Download
  • Version 0.9.4
  • Licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, 2002-2009 Werner Schweer and others.

Thanks for your all your efforts.

Thanks, I will get right to it.

Regarding the manual translations, here are the Norwegian (Bokmål) strings:

  • Gratis programvare for komponering og noteskriving
  • Gratis nedlasting
  • Versjon 0.9.4
  • Lisensiert under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 lisensen, 2002-2009 Werner Schweer med flere.

Hi, I just have a tiny question.

By "Free" in "Free music composition & notation software", do you mean free as in speech or as in beer? In norwegian we don't have the same ambiguity regarding these words, so "gratis" can only mean free as in beer. If you intend for the description to explain that this is FOSS, it would perhaps be better to use a different translation to specify this. Like:
"Fri og gratis programvare for komposisjon og noteskriving"
or perhaps better
"Fri og åpen programvare for komposisjon og noteskriving"

If the second alternative is used, the download button text "Gratis nedlasting" will supply the added information that MuseScore is indeed also free as in beer.

I guess this is nitpicking, but the current translation does not inform a norwegian visitor that MuseScore is FOSS.

Hi Torch, nice to see more Norwegians here!
I agree that the current translation is not good enough on this point. (I'm the one that did that initial translation)
Your suggestion is better, and it should be used instead.
Feel free (no pun intended) to nitpick on the rest of the translation, it's always good to have more sets of eyes ;)

Thanks!
I've been watching this project for a little while now, since I discovered it a couple of months ago, and it seems to be coming of age. I'd love to see it become a serious contender to the likes of Finale and Sibelius. I've mostly been using Musicator ( which, coincidentally, is a norwegian program ), and although it has its shortcomings, I really love stuff like the input options, that allow me to input rhytmical sequences at blazing speeds. Unfortunately it doesn't run on Linux, so I don't use it these days.

Anyway, regarding the translations, I had a look at http://www.musescore.org/nb/ and it looks pretty good to me. Maybe the first sentence could be rearranged a bit to get a better flow:
From:
"MuseScore er et gratis, kryss-plattform WYSIWYG musikknotasjons-program, lisensiert under GNU GPL."
to something like:
"MuseScore er et gratis WYSIWYG musikknotasjonsprogram for flere plattformer, lisensiert under GNU GPL."
or:
"MuseScore er et fritt WYSIWYG musikknotasjonsprogram for Windows, Mac og Linux, lisensiert under GNU GPL."
or a combination of elements from the above.

Also, perhaps "notasjonsprogram" is sufficient ( instead of "musikknotasjonsprogram" ).

We COULD make an effort to translate WYSIWYG into norwegian, but I reckon it's such an established term that people will understand the meaning regardless.

What do you think?

In reply to by Torch

Hi Torch,

Thanks for your advice on the slogan. It's changed now.
You have permissions now to edit any Norwegian page so feel free to hit the edit tab and improve at will.

In reply to by Torch

Good suggestion. I have updated the teaser page.

You could add a feature request to add input options like the ones in Musicator, if you think that would improve MuseScore?

Does Musicator have a Norwegian version? If so, would you be able to look at the translations of the notation terms in MuseScore and check for inconsistencies?

In reply to by perholje

The Musicator input method might be too fundamentally different to implement in MuseScore, but sure, I can put in a request anyway. I may get lucky :)

Musicator definitely has a norwegian version. I'll try to dig up my install disks and see if it runs well enough under Wine to at least read translations.
